BEL: Vasilki (Васількі)

Virgin experience with the national dish of Belarus!

Welcome to the first instalment of our food adventure in Minsk, Belarus! Arriving at the country without really knowing how to read Belarusian or Russian, my BFF and I were glad that we found a restaurant with English menu at Galileo Mall near Minsk Railway Station.

Draniki is the national dish of Belarus. Do you know what it is?

Cold Beetroot Soup BYR 4.50 (~S$3.05)
Taste: 8/10

Despite the snowy weather, we shared a bowl of cold beetroot soup with kefir, a fermented milk product akin to yogurt, as one of the main ingredients. I relished the mild sweetness and thick consistency of the pink-coloured soup, which also had hard-boiled egg slices, cucumbers and herbs.

Carp Braslavsky BYR 10.90 (~S$7.40)
Taste: 8/10

The eye-catching main course of deep-fried carp was more than decent, for the fish topped with garlic butter and herbs was succulent. While the accompanying potatoes could be moister, the crispy onions were enjoyably sweet and the gherkins were pretty refreshing. Pika's advice: Be careful of bones in the fish!

Draniki with Traditional Thick Gravy BYR 12.00 (~S$8.15)
Taste: 7.5/10

The national dish of Belarus is the potato pancake served with sour cream. Made with floury local potatoes, onions, oil and salt, those served by Vasilki were slightly overcooked, but they still retained their fluffiness. They were accompanied by a small bowl of delectably rich broth with adequately fatty pork ribs.

Lazy Dessert BYR 5.90 (~S$4.00)
Taste: 8/10

I'm not sure why mosaic cake is translated as such. Anyway, the dessert of crushed cookies in dark chocolate and caramel mixture was given the thumbs up by both of us, especially since it was  decadent enough without being too sweet. On the side were a few caramelised walnuts and a small scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

To tell the truth, we actually dined at three different restaurants in Galileo Mall during our stay in Minsk for convenience.
