SIN: Yam's Kitchen

Savoury, silky soya beancurd!

Yam's Kitchen started off with a humble beginning as a food stall in 2011. The founder and executive chef Kelvin Yam has accumulated more than 20 years of experience in the kitchen and is the treasurer of the Singapore Huo Yow Cooks’ Association at the point of writing.

Yam's Kitchen was bestowed with the SG50 Prestige Enterprise Award 2015/16.

Appetiser

The braised peanuts were so-so, while the pickled vegetables were simply sweet without any sour notes.

Salted Egg Pumpkin Stripes S$7.80
Taste: 8/10

Despite being an appetiser dish, I ate the deep-fried pumpkin stripes together with a bowl of white rice. Their natural sweetness was accentuated by the savoury salted egg coating, which also provided a nice contrast to the texture of to the squash plant. They weren't stingy with the amount of salted eggs used for the dish.

Wasabi Prawn Balls (Small) S$18.80
Taste: 7/10

I enjoyed the prawns as they were pretty succulent with crunchy and not-so-thick batter coating. The wasabi mayonnaise, however, was leaning more towards the thin side and thus lacking the oomph I was expecting. Nevertheless, they were more than decent for sure.

Yam's Kitchen Soya Beancurd S$10.80
Taste: 8.5/10

The star of the day was the silky smooth soya beancurd, which went down the throat very easily, in thick, flavourful gravy. It came with a bit of minced meat and the overall appearance was enhanced with the toppings of some crispy flour bits, salted fish and chopped spring onions.

Honey Lime Jelly S$3.80
Taste: 8/10

Swimming in a bowl of lime juice sweetened with a bit of honey were gelatinous aiyu (lit. loving jade) jelly cubes, as well as concentrated lime juice balls that were popping in my mouth. That was certainly an enjoyable dessert to have in the hot midday sun.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10

While there has been mixed reviews online, I had a pleasant experience at Yam's Kitchen. Pika's advice: You may want to try one of their award-winning dishes: Steamed Fish Tail with Sour Spicy Sauce that's priced at S$22.80 for the small portion.
