BAH: Le Chocolat

Don't forget to try the saffron pistachio cake and hot chocolate!

My BFF and I hadn't planned to dine at Le Chocolat at all. It was when we were walking at the quiet Diplomatic Area in the evening that we decided to give the café a try, which is apparently recommended for its wood-fired pizzas.

We opted for a la carte dinner instead of buffet.

Spinach Fatayer BHD 1.800 (~S$6.40)
Taste: 6/10

From the list of Middle Eastern appetisers, we chose the spinach pastry that came with something akin to Thai chili sauce. We actually wanted to try this particular dish at Mama Maya the day before, but it ran out.

The casing turned out to be too thick and doughy for my liking. On the other hand, the filling was quite nice and generously given. Accompanying the spinach were a few pine nuts.

Le Chocolat Special Pizza (Regular) BHD 3.900 (~S$13.85)
Taste: 8/10

Putting the signature pizza into the acid test, we agreed that it was pretty value-for-money. The crust was neither too thick nor too thin with the expected smoky aroma. The toppings - mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, beef pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, oregano and cream - were pretty good, but could be moister. Pika's advice: For an additional BHD 1.000 (~S$3.50), you'll get the large size. I'm pretty sure it can feed four people.

Saffron Pistachio Cake BHD 2.100 (~S$7.45)
Taste: 8/10

The moment I saw the elegant cake at the display counter, I told my BFF that we needed to order that after the meal. While the aroma of the most expensive spice could be stronger, I enjoyed the delicate balance between that and the pistachio, which tend to be overpowering in some eateries. Overall, it wasn't too sweet.

Hot Chocolate BHD 1.900 (~S$6.75)
Taste: 8.5/10

A trip to Le Chocolat wouldn't be complete without ordering the chocolate drink, of course. Rich and velvety and rich, it was blended with steamed milk and topped with just a little bit of whipped cream. I wouldn't mind it to be slightly sweeter.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 8.5/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

We had a pleasant dinner at Le Chocolat. It certainly wasn't a mistake stepping into the café, even though we skipped a chance to have something more Middle Eastern.
