CAM: The Sugar Palm

Tasty stir-fried squid slices with green Kampot peppercorns!

Our last meal in Siem Reap, Cambodia was at The Sugar Palm. Owned by Chef Kethana who escaped the country during the troubled times of the late 1970s and has since returned to revive traditional Khmer cooking skills, the restaurant serves delicious homely food.

Do note that the restaurant doesn't offer any dessert items though.

Crispy Spring Rolls US$5.00 (~S$7.00)
Taste: 8/10

As a fan of spring rolls, I unanimously decided to get those filled with minced pork. shrimps and vegetables. Despite being small, they were executed well without being greasy. The dipping sauce was slightly sour and spicy. Pickled radish and carrot strips added colours to the appetiser dish.

Squid with Kampot Peppercorns US$8.00 (~S$11.20)
Taste: 8.5/10

I relished the tender slices of squid that were beautifully adorned with green Kampot peppercorns. None was rubbery at all. The light brown gravy was delicious with a hint of spiciness, going well with plain rice. As the most expensive fixed price food item on the menu, it certainly lived up to my expectations.

Minced Pork with Morning Glory US$5.00 (~S$7.00)
Taste: 8.5/10

I'm sure kangkung lovers will enjoy the restaurant's creation. The stir-fried leafy vegetable with a bit of oyster sauce and fermented bean paste was really crunchy and juicy, topped with minced pork that added another dimension to the dish. Having said that, I felt that it could be a tad less salty though.

Strawberry Smoothie US$3.00 (~S$4.20)
Taste: 7.5/10

The homemade smoothie was milky and velvety enough for my liking. The amount of sugar was just nice to balance the slight acidity of the strawberries. I'd take it any day to beat the afternoon heat.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7.5/10

Pika's advice: Big fans of frog legs may be interested in one of the two dishes offered at the restaurant, each of them at a seasonal market price. To close this chapter on Siem Reap, here's a picture of Preah Ang Chek and Preah Ang Chorm statues that are worshipped for good luck.
