FJI: Maravu @ Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa

Can Indonesian corn fritter be considered as a 'dim sum' item?

The last lunch time in Fiji was spent at one of the restaurants within the Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa complex. In the afternoon, Maravu offers dim sum dishes to unsuspecting guests from 12 noon to 3.00pm. As the sun was glaring, my BFF and I chose to sit in the sheltered area.

Melon was going to judge the quality of the four dim sum items ordered. BTW, do note that the restaurants within the resort don't take cash payment.

Siu Mai FJD 14.00 (~S$9.10)
Taste: 6/10

We began our light lunch with the steamed dumplings filled with minced pork and prawns. Each of them turned out to be somewhat dehydrated, even though the flavours weren't disappointing. They came with what's described as "green chili and garlic soy dipping sauce", even though I could only see red chili slices and tasted nothing garlicky there.

Crispy Corn Cakes with Caramel Chili Dressing FJD 15.00 (~S$9.75)
Taste: 7/10

Their interpretation of Indonesian bakwan jagung (lit. corn fritter), perhaps? In any case, each of the somewhat crispy corn cakes had enough corn kernels and mashed green peas. They were drizzled with caramel chili dressing that was mildly sweet, but not spicy at all.

Duck San Choy Bao FJD 18.00 (~S$11.75)
Taste: 7/10

We didn't intend to order this particular item at first, but it was recommended by one of the waitresses. The stir-fried duck, minced pork, Chinese sausages and mushrooms with oyster sauce were decent. The lettuce leaves used for the wrap were fresh enough.

Salt and Pepper Prawns with Sriracha Dressing FJD 20.00 (~S$13.05)
Taste: 8/10

The salt and pepper prawns, which were adequately fresh, were what I enjoyed the most. The amount of garlic and spring onions made me excited too. Having said that, the prawns could be cooked for a shorter period of time, so that the flesh would be more succulent still. The accompanying sauce was spicy enough to jolt the taste buds.

Iced Lemongrass and Lychee Tea FJD 9.50 (~S$6.20)
Taste: 7/10

As the weather was hot, we gave up the idea of having hot Chinese tea. Instead, we shared a glass of iced lemongrass and lychee tea. Frankly speaking, the aroma was too mild for my liking, but it was by no means a disappointing drink. It could be a bit sweeter as well.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

Pika's advice: The restaurant serves a range of Southeast Asian dishes in the evening. You may want to give them a try. Trying the dim sum items once was enough, although they weren't really bad. Anyway, do take a look at the picture below where Pikachu and Melon were relaxing in a hammock.

I really miss Fiji. I certainly am gonna explore more of the Pacific Ocean in the future.
