SIN: Sofra Turkish Café & Restaurant

Authentic Turkish cuisine, including unique chocolate pudding with marshmallow!

Literally meaning 'dining table' in Turkish, Sofra has stood the test of time. Its history dates back to 8 January 2000, and it has still drawn lots of customers looking for authentic Turkish cuisine till date.

Perhaps one day I shall bring my sister, who's currently studying in Istanbul, to seek her opinion with regard to the food served in the restaurant. :P

Grape Leaves Roll S$5.90
Taste: 7.5/10

Having eaten the dish in Turkey before, I could tell the authenticity of Sofra's version. True to its roots, each of the grape leaves roll was stuffed with rice flavoured with spices, pine nuts and currants. It was a pity that there wasn't any yogurt sauce at sight, which otherwise would heighten the enjoyment of the appetiser.

Izgara Kofte (Beef and Lamb) S$16.90
Taste: 8/10

As for the main course, I tried the grilled flattened meatballs made of beef and lamb. While they might seem dry, it wasn't actually the case. The meat was moist without being too oily. Besides that, the pickled vegetables were fresh and crunchy, but what was even better was the rice pilaf due to its pleasant flavours and fragrance. Pika's advice: If you don't fancy either beef or lamb, you can opt for chicken meatballs instead.

Mushroom Fish S$17.50
Taste: 8/10

Arriving with the same set of side dishes, beautifully arranged on a shell-shaped plate, was the succulent dory fish. It came with a mix of tomato and cream sauce, a happy marriage between sweet and sour, as well as savoury. The juicy mushrooms certainly made the whole thing merrier.

Turkish Chocolate Pudding with Marshmallow S$5.40
Taste: 8/10

Instead of the more well-known baklava (Turkish pastry made of layers of filo and sweetened with simply syrup or the likes), I decided to try the chocolate pudding topped with mashmallow, crushed pistachios and grated coconut for dessert. It turned out to be pleasantly sweet and velvety, accentuating the savoury taste of the crushed green nuts.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7.5/10

While the food was great, service could be more amiable. Having said that, all the dishes came to the table promptly.
