SIN: Vava Bistro

How does this sound: runny yolk over stir-fried mushrooms? :P

Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Vava Bistro overlooks the picturesque MacRitchie Reservoir. After a long day at work, it was relaxing to have a wholesome conversation with my BFF over a quiet dinner.

The bistro serves an eclectic range of cuisine that includes fusion dishes, one of which we ordered as shown in the picture above. Care to make a guess?

Tuna Salad FOC
Taste: 7/10

That small bowl of tuna salad with mayonnaise and flying fish roe on top of it was a pleasant surprise, especially due to the fact that it was given without charge. The chunky tuna blended well with the mildly sweet mayonnaise, although the iceberg lettuce could be fresher.

Sautéed Mushrooms with Soft-Boiled Egg S$9.80
Taste: 8/10

Presented on the plate was a quartet of mushrooms: button, oyster, shiitake and shimeji. Nicely stir-fried with oyster sauce as one of the key ingredients, the mushrooms were earthy and juicy. Sitting on top of them were was an egg that was poached well.

Bacon and Prawn Aglio Olio S$16.80
Taste: 7/10

I wonder if you've got the same question as what was in my mind that evening, "Where's the bacon?" I suppose they ran out of it, but the server didn't say anything. Anyway, the pasta dish was decent, even though it could have had more garlic. The mushrooms were juicy, while the prawns were slightly succulent.

Crab-Bily on an Island S$18.80
Taste: 7/10

Listed as one of the best-seller items, the fusion dish of soft-shell crabs with chili crab sauce was quite beautifully presented, although it didn't taste extraordinary. The sauce was somewhat lacking in the zing that I'd expected it to be, although the deep-fried crustaceans were adequately crispy without being greasy. The mashed potatoes, hidden from the view in the picture above, were quite milky.

Rainbow Cheesecake S$9.80
Taste: 6/10

Never had I tried a slice of multi-coloured cake before, so that was my virgin experience with the dessert that somehow reminded me of a parrot. While the menu boasts multi-layered flavours: strawberry, orange, lemon, pandan, vanilla, blueberry and yam, they were hardly discernible. It tasted pretty much like an ordinary cheesecake, and I found its crust to be too thin for my liking.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 6/10
Overall: 7/10

While the food was acceptable, it was the atmosphere that I enjoyed more. Pika's advice: For those who enjoy Japanese food, the bistro also serves quite a wide selection of the said cuisine.
