SIN: Le Bistrot de l'Olive {CLOSED}

Where Mediterranean dishes meet (and beat) French... :P

UPDATE (26/05/2019): The restaurant has closed down.

Located on the first floor of V Hotel Bencoolen, which vicinity is currently undergoing construction of the future Downtown Line MRT station, Le Bistrot de l'Olive serves not only French food, but also Mediterranean cuisine. It's a Halal certified restaurant.

Could you see the excitement in the eyes of my hunchbacked bear in front of that huge platter?

Sanbusik (Lamb) S$13.90
Taste: 7/10

Each of the Lebanese pastry, shaped somewhat akin to our local curry puffs, was filled with minced lamb, onions and pine nuts. While the filling was quite flavourful, I found that it wasn't as moist as I'd wanted it to be. Pika's advice: Not a fan of lamb? You can opt for chicken filling instead.

Sauté de Grosses Crevettes à la Moutarde à l'Ancienne S$25.00
Taste: 5/10

I was quite surprised to find out that the prawns in Dijon mustard came with pasta instead of rice. In all honesty, they didn't match well. The former weren't especially fresh. I also found that the pasta could be more al dente, while the sauce was a bit too thick for my liking, albeit having enough garlic.

Mixed Grill S$30.00
Taste: 8/10

Compared to the French main course ordered, the Mediterranean platter with its fair share of meat and saffron rice was certainly more value-for-money. The minced lamb and chicken kebabs were executed well with bold flavours, while the grilled chicken cubes were delightfully tender. The lamb rack was somewhat tough though.

Crème Brûlée (Vanilla) S$6.00
Taste: 6.5/10

I recall that there were two flavours of the perennially favourite French dessert on the display: vanilla and pistachio if I'm not mistaken. I opted for the former, but it was nothing special. While the caramel layer was crispy and thick enough, the custard could be slightly firmer.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10

Better to stick to the Mediterranean dishes, I'd say.
