SIN: Feng Bo Zhuang

A huge bowl of hot steamed pumpkin slices for dessert, anyone?

My two BFFs and I came across Feng Bo Zhuang, a restaurant with quite a unique Kung Fu theme, while walking around the Chinatown area. Weapons, such as swords and axes, adorned the bamboo walls of the restaurant.

Braised Beef S$8.00
Taste: 5/10

More often that not, I've always looked forward to enjoying Chinese cold dishes. However, upon the arrival of the braised beef on the table that evening, I had a sense of disbelief at how dry the meat looked. True enough, each slice was lacking in moisture, even though it was somewhat flavourful.

Pan-Fried Frog S$18.00
Taste: 7.5/10

Being slightly soft and springy, the pan-fried frog meat, done kung pao style, came with an adequate amount of spiciness from the dried chilis and Sichuan peppercorns. In my opinion, the overall taste of the dish could be a bit sweeter for a better balance of flavours.

Prawns with Oat Flakes S$20.00
Taste: 6/10

I was delighted by the fact that the prawns were fried well to the point of maximum crispiness of their shells. It was a pity that the crustaceans weren't that fresh though. That aside, the amount of oats on the plate, interspersed with curry leaves, looked certainly promising. However, they weren't that crispy either.

Special Claypot Soup S$12.00
Taste: 8/10

Featured inside the medium-sized claypot was pork bone soup with pork ribs, cabbages and red dates that gave it an added sweetness. While it wasn't as thick as I'd love it to be, it was nevertheless heart-warming. That was certainly the best item ordered for the evening.

Steamed Pumpkin with Red Dates and White Fungus S$10.00
Taste: 6.5/10

The restaurant only serves two dessert items, the other one being a concoction of pine nuts and corn kernels. I have to say that their huge plate of steamed pumpkin can easily feed four people. The three of us could barely finish the pumpkin slices, which were mildly sweet and just a tad mushy. I'd really love to have more white fungus.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

While I was pretty impressed by the decor of the restaurant, I wasn't equally impressed by the food. Pika's advice: For interested individuals, do try their Special Chinese Dumpling, which is limited to one serving per person, priced at S$2.00 each.
