SIN: Cocotto

Have you ever tried chicken ajillo before?

Cocotto is an eatery-cum-bar that offers an eclectic mix of Japanese-inspired cuisine and other international fares, some of which are served in French style pots. It's located within walking distance from either Telok Ayer or Raffles Place MRT station.

Chicken Sesame Salad S$8.00
Taste: 8/10

The salad made a good start to the dinner as the vegetables used were fresh, bound together by the delectably tangy sesame dressing with an adequate amount of sweetness. While the white meat could be juicier, it was pretty tender nonetheless.


Nikomi Cheese Hamburg S$9.90
Taste: 6/10

At first glance, the dish reminded me of bistik jawa, an Indonesian style beef steak laden with sauce that uses sweet soy sauce as one of its main ingredients. Cocotto's version of hamburg steak was swimming in a pot of brown sauce that was, unfortunately, way too sweet for my liking. The minced beef patty was tender though. Pika's advice: Instead of rice, you can choose to have bread to go along with the hamburg steak.


Chicken Ajillo S$11.00
Taste: 7.5/10

A traditional Spanish cuisine that hailed from south Madrid, ajillo is for garlic lovers out there. What I had the other day was tender chicken meat simmered in an oil bath, claimed to be olive oil, with tons of fried garlic bits and onions. Eaten with crispy bread that had been brushed with butter, it was full of flavours, although I just couldn't handle too much of the grease towards the end. 


Brûlée Cocotto S$5.30
Taste: 7/10

The perennial French favourite was infused with the aroma of jasmine and vanilla, which was mild, but decent enough. In my opinion, the egg custard could be more velvety. Apart from that, it was mildly sweet alright.

Perhaps one day I shall return to get the ajillo once again. I'll bring two or three friends with me to share that dish.
