SIN: Ambush

Get your all-year-round Oktoberfest platter here! :P

As a big fan of RPG since young, the first thing that came to mind when I first saw a restaurant named Ambush in 2005 was such an attack in the Final Fantasy series. I'm really wondering why Stanley Ng, the founder of the restaurant, chose that name.

Apparently, it's only 11 years later that I finally stepped myself into one of the branches at Plaza Singapura. :P

Rosti with Smoked Salmon and Flavoured Crème Fraîche S$10.50
Taste: 6.5/10

The fried shredded potatoes came with not-too-salty smoked salmon and sour cream flavoured with lemon juice and dill. The dish wasn't particularly inspiring as the potatoes weren't that crispy, but its overall taste was more than acceptable. If you think the one served at Marché Restaurant is overrated, well, think again. :P

Oktoberfest Platter S$17.80
Taste: 7.5/10

The all-year-round Oktoberfest dish, comprising two types of sausages, pork knuckle, mashed potatoes, leafy greens and sauerkraut (lit. sour cabbage), was quite a filling main course. The sausages had a nice smoky aroma, while the pork knuckle could be moister. The mashed potatoes were quite milky, but not velvety enough for my liking.

Risotto Al Nero with Soft-Shell Crab S$18.50
Taste: 7/10

Does it appear to you like the soft-shell crab was holding the wedge of lemon tightly? Anyway, while the squid ink risotto was adequately creamy and flavourful, the crustacean wasn't that fresh. Neither it was deep-fried to perfection till highly crispy, although I have to admit that it wasn't greasy.

Baileys Crème Brûlée S$8.80
Taste: 7.5/10

Upon seeing one of my most favourite liqueur making its way into my favourite French burnt cream under the dessert list, I got really excited. It turned out that the aroma of the Irish cream was there, but not that intense. The custard base was somewhat rich, but could be even more so with a higher degree of creaminess.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 6/10
Overall: 6.5/10

While the food was acceptable, I found the service to be lacking warmth. While there wasn't any serious delay in the delivery of the food items, the staff seemed spiritless. Pika's advice: Top up S$5.50 with every main course ordered to enjoy soup of the day and drink.
