SIN: Jing Long Seafood Restaurant

Sweet, sour, salty (and spicy when eaten with chili) fish skin!

Started off as a humble stall in Bedok in 1999, Jing Long Seafood Restaurant managed to make its business work. After 10 years, it took up an offer to take over a restaurant space just opposite the original stall. It was one of the rare occasions that I went all the way to the east for dinner.

Fish Skin with Thai Sauce S$9.80
Taste: 8.5/10

My BFF and I decided to order a snack to munch on while waiting for the rest of the dishes to come. The fish skin was delightfully crispy and adequately salted, balanced by the tangy pickles on top of it that offered dimensions of sweet and sour. The accompanying chili sauce packed quite a punch.

Sliced Fish with Spring Onion and Ginger (Small) S$13.80
Taste: 8/10

The fish slices were fresh, evident from the pretty sweet and bouncy flesh, but there weren't that many of them. There were, however, enough ginger slices that made the dish aromatic and mildly spicy.

Braised Duck with Sea Cucumber (Small) S$38.80
Taste: 8.5/10

Having a dip in a pool of piping hot dark sauce that was richly sweet, the duck was gratifyingly tender. Prior to the dinner, it'd been a long time since I'd eaten sea cucumber, so it was really nice to relish such a chewy texture once again. The mushrooms and vegetables were juicy as well. Pika's advice: Do note that the small portion can easily feed three (or even four) people.

Crispy Eggplants with French Beans (Small) S$12.80
Taste: 8/10

Being one of the two signature vegetable dishes, the stir-fried duo was indeed full of crunch. I hope it's not too cheeky to say that each of the earthy eggplants married each of the juicy green beans well.

Herbal Jelly with Honey S$3.80
Taste: 8/10

The herbal jelly, which wasn't overwhelmingly bitter, ran down the throat easily. The honey surely helped to soothe my throat after the heavy meal.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10

I only realised that I hadn't taken the picture of the appetiser, which was a small plate of braised peanuts, after it was finished. Well, I shall go back again someday as the restaurant is pretty promising.
