SIN: GastroSmiths {CLOSED}

Delicious rice bowl with Hokubee beef, 63° egg and furikake!

UPDATE (26/07/2020): The restaurant has closed down.

It was a nice find on one afternoon after wandering around the vicinity of Bugis. A small, comfy restaurant with interesting drawings on its walls, GastroSmiths offers a variety of Asian and European comfort food.

Fisherman's Mee Sua S$25.50
Taste: 8/10

That was definitely the most expensive mee sua (Chinese thin noodle made from wheat flour) I've ever eaten in my life. Swimming in homemade scampi bisque that was quite rich, the mee sua was a joy to slurp. It came with a medley of seafood that was fresh and springy.

Signature Hokubee Beef Bowl S$28.00
Taste: 9/10

A bowl of happiness was presented before my eyes. While not as premium, the grilled Hokubee beef, which is a kind of beef that is artificially marbled via fat injection, didn't disappoint at all with its juicy and tender quality. On top of that, there was a 63° egg with what I'd consider to be a perfect yolk with its absolute creaminess. The well-cooked vinegared Japanese rice was spiked with flavourful furikake (Japanese mixed dried seasonings).

French Onion Poutine S$15.00
Taste: 7/10

My BFF and I decided to order shoestring fries laden with French onion gravy and Gruyère cheese. I felt that the gravy wasn't as sweet as I'd hoped it to be, and there wasn't enough of the melted cheese. Nevertheless, it wasn't at all a bad side dish.

Beet and Cheese S$14.00
Taste: 8/10

My BFF doesn't really like beetroot due to its smell, but I proceeded with the order of the unique dessert dish anyway. It turned out to be devoid of that earthy smell, so he enjoyed it. Comprising beetroot fluid gel, beetroot sponge, cheese and ice cream, it was mildly sweet and adequately tart overall.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10

Well, that adds to the list of restaurants that I'm going to revisit. Even though it's 'fake' Kobe beef, I like it a lot. Pika's advice: If you come in a group of three or more, you may want to consider the 1.2 kg Black Angus Prime Rib that's priced at S$168.00. Pre-ordering is highly advised .
