SIN: Taratata Brasserie (fr. Taratata Bistrot)

Scoop the escargots sauce up with thin, crispy bread slices!

UPDATE (23/07/2020): I just found out that the restaurant has undergone a slight renaming.

Living in Chinatown gives me easy access to Keong Saik Road. In this blog, this is apparently the fourth review of an eatery along the road that's said to be a haven for foodies. Taratata Bistrot is designed to look like a Parisian estaminet with red booth seats, checkered tiles and pendant lamps. My friend and I tried the S$45.00 3-Course Set Menu each, ordering the same appetiser and dessert.

Escargots a la Bourguignonne (Half Dozen) (Set Menu)
Taste: 8.5/10

Burgundy is the region where the dish of escargots cooked in garlic herb butter first emerged. Half a dozen of land snails was served in front of me with a small bowl full of thin, crispy bread slices.

Each of the six escargots was enjoyably chewy, bathed in truly aromatic melted butter that'd surely make garlic lovers go crazy too. It was really fun to scoop the delightful mess up with the bread slices.

Bread

Not a fan of the thin bread slices? Fret not. The free baguette that I had was pretty soft on the inside, and not overly hard on the outside.

Bavette de Boeuf Angus a l’échalote (Set Menu)
Taste: 6/10

The 200 g Angus beef flank steak didn't quite live up to my expectation, but it was by no means disappointingly tough. On the other hand, I found the caramelised shallots nice as they were full of natural sweetness. I also enjoyed the crispy fries that were executed well.

Confit de Canard (Set Menu)
Taste: 8/10

Another main course that we tried was the fried duck, which was better than the beef main course. The crispy skin melted in the mouth, even though the meat grew a tad too salty towards the end. Thankfully, there were milky mashed potatoes and caramelised onions chopped into small pieces, lending a sweet taste to the sauce.

Sorbet (Double Scoop) (Set Menu)
Taste: 8/10

To cleanse the palate at the end of the lunch, I tried the sorbet, which surprisingly came in three scoops despite what's written on the menu. The sweetness of the mango sorbet was well-balanced by the sour raspberry counterpart.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 6/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

While the decor of the restaurant is indeed nice, the restaurant is pretty small, thus the tables are placed very close to another. Pika's advice: There are many different set meals offered by the eatery to fit every budget. You can find out more from their website.
