SIN: Oceans of Seafood {CLOSED}

Fresh seafood indeed, but the maki rolls weren't value-for-money at all...

UPDATE (24/10/2019): The eatery has closed down.

A friend of mine told me, "Hey, Tsukiji is in Singapore!" I was scratching my head trying to figure out what he meant until he said that there was a purveyor of fresh seafood from that famous fish market in Tokyo, Japan in PasarBella. At its eatery, Oceans of Seafood serves not only Japanese cuisine, but also its Western counterpart.

Unakyu Maki S$6.50
Taste: 6.5/10

For its price, it was totally not worth the money, even though the taste was acceptable. I bet you can see clearly how thinly sliced the eel was, each of them being squeezed by a slice of cucumber that was at least twice as thick. I had no doubt about the freshness of the former, but I have to say that putting each roll into the mouth didn't give as much pleasure as that I could get from a cheaper eatery.

Chawanmushi S$7.00
Taste: 8/10

My BFF's staple whenever dining at a Japanese eatery, the chawanmushi (Japanese egg custard) didn't have any faults. It was velvety enough with a good balance of flavours. Perhaps being more exquisite than what are usually offered elsewhere, it included items like fish roe and Japanese mustard.

Salmon Oyako Chirashi S$28.00
Taste: 8.5/10

How gorgeous that bowl of rice with salmon slices and salmon roe! The salmon was indeed as fresh as what one can get at Tsukiji Fish Market, with the meat being springy and naturally flavourful and the roe bursting with tasty juice. The rice, however, could be seasoned better. As a point of comparison, I really feel that Genki Sushi, one of my to-go places near where I live in Chinatown, does it well.

Maguro Hamburger S$14.00
Taste: 8.5/10

At half the price of the above main course, the Western style tuna hamburger was surprisingly equally good, being thick, juicy and succulent at the same time. A slab of the well-grilled swimmer was coated with sweet buttermilk that immediately reminded me of coleslaw. The bun, however, wasn't that fluffy. None of the flat fries was soggy. Pika's advice: You can opt for a deep-fried tuna patty should you prefer it to be crispy.

Ambience: 8/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

For those who don't drive, to go all the way to PasarBella just to dine at Oceans of Seafood would probably be too much. It's gonna be worth it to walk around the entire area, seeing what the different stalls have got to offer (not just seafood items) and absorbing the atmosphere.
