SIN: Noodle Star

Zesty Sichuan style noodle, but disappointing steamed rice...

As one walks around Bugis Village that comprises restored pre-war shophouses, he's bound to be treated to the sights of not only stalls selling paraphernalia, but also eateries. Yesterday, I found myself in front of Noodle Star that's managed by Gao Ji Food that has been around since 1954.

Braised Beef Shank S$6.80
Taste: 7.5/10

Braised beef shank was what I ordered as a prelude, which came at room temperature. I'd actually prefer it to be chilled. Each slice was gelatinous enough, even though it could be marinated better to make it more delicious. Fresh slices of cucumbers and tomatoes were there as accompaniments.

Deep-Fried Prawns Coated with Wasabi Mayonnaise S$16.80
Taste: 6/10

I'd been eagerly waiting for the dish to come, but I was left with disappointment after taking a bite. While the prawns were passably succulent, the wasabi mayonnaise tasted kinda out of ordinary. It didn't quite have that stinging sensation. The saving grace lied in the delightfully sweet mango bits.

Noodle in Sour and Spicy Creamy Soup with Tofu and Shrimps S$8.80
Taste: 8/10

One of the main courses ordered for the dinner that day was the Sichuan style noodle in hot and sour soup that was refreshingly zesty, but not spicy enough to jolt the taste buds. It came with very few succulent shrimps, smooth tofu strips, julienned carrots and mushrooms.

Classic Steamed Rice S$8.80
Taste: 5/10

Steamed rice has always reminded me of HK, in particular that offered by Gold Rice Bowl, one of the HKUST school canteen providers. Sadly, the one to be described today was no match to the former. Comprising chicken, preserved sausages, salted fish, mushroom and kailan (Chinese broccoli), it was pretty dry and uninspiring.

Chilled Grass Jelly with Mango and Aloe Vera S$4.80
Taste: 8.5/10

It was my virgin experience with such a concoction using mango, which was topped with mint leaves to add a nice accent to the overall colours. As ambrosial as the ones in the prawn dish, the gooey mango layer apparently went well with the crunchy aloe vera and slimy grass jelly. The sweetness was far from being artificial for sure.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10

The noodle that I tried was good indeed, but perhaps not really qualifying to be a star. Pika's advice: If you're interested in sampling small bowls of different noodle dishes, go for their Triple Treasure Noodle that's currently priced at S$7.80.
