SIN: La Petite Cuisine

Mouth-watering duck leg with addictively crispy skin!

If you're looking for affordable, honest-to-goodness French food, you may want to consider La Petite Cuisine at Serene Centre, a place close to my heart due to the fact that I used to buy my secondary school uniform at the nearby Coronation Plaza. I remember that it used to be a small, al fresco eatery, but now it has indoor seats with air-conditioning.

Ravioli of Spinach in Lemon Crème S$13.00
Taste: 8.5/10

To kickstart our early dinner, my ex-instructor and I decided to share the vegetarian-friendly ravioli filled with spinach that came with a hint of cinnamon. The Italian style wantons were delicious, swimming in adequately thick and creamy lemon sauce that wasn't cloying on the palate.

Bread

The bread could be served warm, but anyway, it was a delight to scoop the aforementioned lemon sauce clean with it. Neither of us used the butter.

Confit de Canard with Gratin Potato S$17.50
Taste: 8.5/10

I purposely came all the way down there to give their well-known dish another try after so long. The duck leg was bursting with natural sweetness, not to mention the addictively fatty and crispy skin still attached onto the meat. The brown sauce was just a tad too salty though. The potatoes were creamy without being sickeningly rich.

Sea Prawns with Wholegrain Mustard with Butter Rice and Salad S$19.50
Taste: 7.5/10

I'm a sucker for wholegrain mustard. Truth be told, the one I tried there wasn't as good as I thought it'd be, but it was creamy and tangy alright. The prawns could be juicier, while the butter rice could be more, well, buttery. The vegetables were drizzled with enough vinaigrette.

Crème Brûlée S$5.50
Taste: 7/10

As we were planning to go for a drink in town after the dinner, we shared a small cup of the burnt cream, to put it crudely. The caramel layer was too hard for my liking, even though the custard layer had a nice degree of sweetness. The texture could also be more velvety.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10

I feel that for just S$17.50, the mouth-watering duck is really worth it. Some people said that the service they encountered was bad. We were mentally prepared, but it turned out that the two servers we interacted with were friendly. Pika's advice: If you like to gamble your luck, you may want to try ordering their Special Dessert from France priced at S$6.50. See what you're going to get, but take not that it's not available everyday.
