D.Y.P. (Design Your Palate) Platter!

UPDATE (14/03/2021): The restaurant has closed down.

When I was still studying at NUS as an undergraduate, I enjoyed going down to Rochester Park, a stretch of road not too far from Buona Vista MRT station with many eateries offering not only good food, but also cosy ambience. As I'm now working nearby, I had a chance to drop by the area and had a quiet dinner at one of the restaurants there, namely Sixty40.

D.Y.P. Platter S$29.00
Beef Tataki - Taste: 6/10
Spanish Jamón Ibérico - Taste: 6/10
Grilled Squid - Taste: 7.5/10

The eatery boasts its D.Y.P. Platter in which patrons can mix and match various items, The beef fillet didn't really have a nice texture as some of them were a bit chewy, but the ponzu (Japanese citrus-based sauce) felt fresh on the tongue. The Spanish black pig dry-cured ham didn't impress either, and it didn't come with vine-ripened tomatoes as mentioned in the menu booklet. The squid with lemon, albeit simple, was the best item on the platter. Pika's advice: Indecisive? You may want to consider any of the pre-designed three platters, which happen to have non-creative names: Sixty40, Sixty and 40, which price tag isn't even S$40.00.

Prawn Aglio Olio S$20.00
Taste: 7.5/10

The prawns, or rather shrimps, where beautifully done in this particular main course. They were seared lightly enough to bring out the aroma, while having that to-die-for bouncy and crunchy texture. However, the spaghetti fell short of expectation. It was leaning more towards the soft side. I'd also love to have more garlic.

Fish and Chips S$22.00
Taste: 8/10

The beer-battered fish sticks might not look fancy, but they were nicely light and crispy. The piscean meat could be firmer though. The tartar sauce hit all the right spots. The accompanying fries were lightly seasoned, but some of them could be firmer as well.

Gingerlicious S$10.00
Taste: 8.5/10

I wasn't in the mood for a heavy alcoholic drink, so I opted for a tall glass of ginger soda that also contained ginger syrup, ginger beer and lime juice. It was enjoyably aromatic and refreshing, washing down the fats from the dishes earlier. Ginger lovers, you should try this particular drink!

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7.5/10

It was a pity that the food wasn't spectacular, perhaps not warranting a return visit, but the dim and relaxing ambience was pretty good.
