HKG: Fai Kee Store (輝記小食士多)

Vinegary noodle with juicy wantons!

Welcome back to HK! On my second visit in December last year, I decided to explore Lamma Island once again. Just about 30 minutes away from the bustling city by ferry, it's pretty much a tranquil island with a relaxed pace of life. Instead of having a seafood meal like what I did before at Lamma Hilton Shum Kee Seafood Restaurant, I went for something simple near Hung Shin Ye Beach. Note that this eatery doesn't have an English menu, so I'm going to give a simple name to each of the dishes below together with its actual name in traditional Chinese characters.

Fish Balls and Siu Mai HK$10.00 (~S$1.75)
Taste: 7.5/10

The actual name of the dish is 魚蛋. Comprising fried fish balls and siu mai (Chinese steamed pork dumpling), the former were pretty chewy, while the latter were equally so without having much of the promised meat. Both of them were drizzled with a small amount of soy sauce.

Instant Noodle with Luncheon Meat and Egg HK$25.00 (~S$4.30)
Taste: 6.5/10

The actual name of the dish 腸蛋丁麵. It's said that Hongkongers love instant noodles, thus the one shown here is one of the typical dishes one can expect when visiting an eatery in the region. The slices of luncheon meat were quite meaty, while there wasn't anything special about the fried egg.

Wanton Noodle HK$30.00 (~S$5.20)
Taste: 8/10

The actual name of the dish is exactly 雲吞麵. The shape embodied by each of the dumplings might not be appealing, but it was filled with juicy pork and shrimps. The noodle had a pretty strong, but acceptable vinegar taste. It could be chewier though. On the other hand, the piping hot soup was mildly sweet.

Fish with Minced Meat Noodle HK$35.00 (~S$6.05)
Taste: 7.5/10

The actual name of the dish is 魚肉麵. The eatery doesn't serve sliced fish, but instead, it combines the white flesh with minced pork, coriander and a bit of flour. Even though it was enjoyably chewy, I felt that there wasn't enough fish in the mixture that afternoon.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 6/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

Service was  more than adequate. The man who took the order that had quite a loud voice, but he was pretty friendly. Pika's advice: The two ladies on the table next to us ordered grilled chicken wings that looked good. You may want to give them a try.

Below is a picture of my mom, Honeydew and I on the beach. :)
