MAS: Ole Sayang

Stir-fried squid that reminded me of home~

Prior to the trip, I had been searching day and night for a restaurant that serves good and authentic Peranakan cuisine. Listed as one of the original Peranakan restaurants in town, Ole Sayang was the place of choice for dinner during our 2D1N trip. One of the reasons is its close proximity to Midcity Hotel Melaka where we were staying in.

We initially wanted to order four different dishes, but the last dish wasn't available due to the fact that the restaurant had run out of one important ingredient.

Keropok RM 1.00 (~S$0.40)
Taste: 8.5/10

The server was kind enough to ask whether we'd like to have crackers for appetiser. We obliged, and eventually asked for another plate. The clean sweetness of each piece was well-balanced by its fine, crispy texture. Pika's advice: The restaurant sells the crackers in packets if you wish to bring them home!

Sotong Goreng Asam (Small) RM 12.00 (~S$4.55)
Taste: 8.5/10

A dish that immediately reminded me of home, the stir-fried squid rings were laden with sweet and sour sauce that was delightfully thick. Each ring was pretty juicy without being rubbery at all, and it was certainly a delight to scoop the sauce on top of piping hot white rice.

Ayam Pong Teh (Small) RM 15.00 (~S$5.70)
Taste: 3.5/10

I'm afraid to say that it was the worst Nyonya stewed chicken dish that I've ever had in my life. Don't get me wrong; the chicken was actually fine, even though it could be more succulent. The brown gravy, however, was totally diabetes-inducing. I wonder how much gula melaka (Malay brown sugar) was added into the dish.

Itik Tim (Small) RM 19.00 (~S$7.25)
Taste: 8.5/10

Thankfully, there was an awesome bowl of soup to wash off the nauseating sweetness of the chicken dish. Brewed for hours, it carried with it tender duck meat and preserved vegetables. The taste of the soup was definitely not one-dimensional, with just enough tasty globules of oil from the poultry.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

We skipped dessert since there's only a few choice available. The ones that the large group of people had beside us didn't look particularly good either. Frankly speaking, I'm not exactly a fan of Peranakan cuisine, but I'd definitely love to explore more.
