SIN: Mid-Autumn 2014 Mooncakes @ TWG Tea

When kaya mousse met strawberry jam~

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival, everyone! This year, the streets of Chinatown here in Singapore are lit by more than 3,000 flower-shaped lanterns. After pondering for so long, I've finally decided to give the snowskin mooncakes from the purveyor of 'the finest teas of the world' a try.


TWG Tea Snowskin Mooncakes (Set of 4) S$60.00

Before describing the filling of each individual mooncake, I have to say that even though the appearance was appealing, the snowskin fell short of expectation. It was too soft without having my preferred chewy texture.


Greetings from my hunchbacked bear! Pika's advice: To complete the experience, you can get their special blend of tea called Red Lantern Tea. The only catch is that it is packaged together with two mooncakes for S$70.00 and not sold separately.


Aurora
Taste: 8/10

The sun-kissed yellow mooncake encased salted caramel mousse that was pretty savoury, but I'd prefer something with more of a kick. The aroma of Napolean Tea could be traced, while the heart of pear marmalade was nice, but not utterly special.


Illumination
Taste: 8/10

The charcoal black mooncake concealed a filling of nutty praline which, again, wasn't overly sweet. Infused with 1837 Black Tea, it complemented the aromatic, hard-to-find oriental orange marmalade well.


Pure
Taste: 7.5/10

The satin white mooncake featured smooth milk chocolate mousse, which mild sweetness was accentuated by the sour blackcurrant marmalade centre. 1837 White Tea was infused into the chocolate paste, but I was unable to detect it.


Serenity
Taste: 8/10

The turquoise blue mooncake revealed subtle, yet delectable kaya mousse which was mixed with Vanilla Bourbon Tea. The strawberry jam core was what I could hope for, accompanied with coconut crisps for an added crunch.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10

I suppose the last picture clearly shows how soft the snowskin was. I had a hard time handling it, and everything became a mess. TWG Tea, you've got to do better!

Where you can find the "world famous peameal bacon on a bun"! Originally opened in 1902, St. Lawrence Market is an iconic public market in Toronto, Canada, a culinary hotspot showcasing more than 120 merchants. The current building incorporates one that was once home to the first permanent city hall and jailhouse that operated from 1845 to 1899. During our visit, my BFF and I sampled some delights for breakfast.
