HKG: Lei Bistro (利小館)

Fantastic baked pork chop rice!

The Lei Garden Restaurant Group, having established Michelin Star worthy restaurants across the country, has also ventured into casual restaurants serving quality healthy dishes at affordable prices. It is claimed that "in order to maintain equilibrium between enjoyment and health, [Lei Bistro's] menu [puts] more emphasis on steamed, braised and stewed dishes and less deep-fried items."

Pan-Fried Taro and Pumpkin Cakes HK$30.00 (~S$4.80)
Taste: 8.5/10

To test their claim, I tried to order a fried appetiser dish to kickstart the dinner. Being minimally greasy, the taro and pumpkin cakes were presented nicely. The juxtaposition between the smooth, sweet pumpkin and the starchy and slightly crispy taro layers was enjoyable.

Baby Chinese Cabbage in Soya Milk HK$39.00 (~S$6.25)
Taste: 8.5/10

Having lots of minerals and fibres, the Chinese cabbages were boiled well to the point that they released the sweet juice, but still retaining the crunch. The soya milk was mildly flavoured, complementing the greens well.

Baked Pork Chop Rice with Tomato Sauce HK$49.00 (~S$7.90)
Taste: 9/10

The main course that I had was an awesome dish of baked rice which was bursting with flavours. The pork chop was moist and tender, smothered with thick tomato sauce which was sweet and savoury. The yolk of the egg on top of it was runny.

That gorgeous pork chop was really juicy. For the dish to be even better, I guess the tomato sauce could be slightly sourer.

Red Dates Cake HK$26.00 (~S$4.20)
Taste: 8/10

For dessert, the popular red dates cake seemed to be an interesting choice for me. Each slice was akin to Nyonya cake commonly found here in Singapore, but it was mildly sweet with a nice hint of red dates. I'd prefer the texture to be slightly more chewy though.

Pear and Longan Drink (Cold) HK$15.00 (~S$2.40)
Taste: 6.5/10

The drink that I ordered was nothing to rave about. It wasn't only mildly cool, but also could be slightly sweeter. It came with two slices of pear and three longans. Well, I suppose that was indeed a healthy drink.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

That was the last restaurant I visited during the short trip to down the memory lane to HK. Fret not, I'm going there again at the end of the year with my family, so I'll definitely write more about HK eateries next time! Pika's advice: The family sitting next to me ordered a delicious-looking Grilled King Prawn with Himalaya Pink Salt (Whole) priced at HK$58.00 (~S$9.30). You may want to give it a try!
