HKG: Duo Bao Mei Shi (多寶美食)

Fried large intestines to die for!

To me, a trip to HK isn't complete without gorging on my favourite deep-fried large intestines. There are several places selling that, but the only one that I can remember is the stall at Temple Street Night Market, Jordan. Since I can't read the Chinese characters in Cantonese, I just put the Mandarin Romanisation of it.

Let's forget about being healthy for a while; skewered pork intestines are probably the most fantastic street snack ever created.

Deep-Fried Large Intestine (炸大腸) HK$10.00 (~S$1.60)
Taste: 9.5/10

Having been deep-fried in a large vat of bubbling hot oil, the outer layer of the skewered intestines became highly crispy. It was juxtaposed with the chewy, fatty inner layer which retained a bit of the quintessential innards tang that was, contrary to what sceptics may think, truly addictive. Pika's advice: If you like, don't forget to squeeze a bit of mustard and hoisin sauce (Chinese sauce made of starch, soybeans, vinegar, etc.) to your stick of awesomeness!

'Shark Fin' Bowl (碗仔翅) HK$16.00 (~S$2.60)
Taste: 7.5/10

A more environmentally friendly choice compared to the actual shark fin, the Cantonese wun tsai chi has become a very popular street food for decades. The one that I had the other day used vermicelli to imitate the otherwise highly-priced fin, swimming in a delightfully thick soup which was good, but perhaps just a little bit too sour.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8.5/10

Below is a picture of the stall. I shall drop by again next time!
