SIN: Sun with Moon

Heavenly, fun-to-gorge matcha parfait!

Sun with Moon is one of my most favourite restaurants in Singapore. Serving authentic Tokyo cuisine on the third floor of Wheelock Place, Orchard Road, it has never failed to carve a smile on my face whenever I dine there. Most of the time, I make reservation beforehand to get one of the sofa seats away from the crowd.

Cheese and Asparagus Beef Steak Roll & Aburi Salmon Roll S$9.00
Cheese and Asparagus Beef Steak Roll - Taste: 9/10
Aburi Salmon Roll - Taste: 8.5/10

A unique combination of thinly sliced, yet savoury beef and cheese was most welcome to kickstart the dinner. For a refreshing and fibrous twist, juicy cherry tomato and asparagus were smacked in between the vinegared Japanese rice. Another variant featured partially raw and partially grilled salmon which pretty much melted in the mouth, topped with spicy mayonnaise and salmon roe.

Age Tofu Nabe & Unagi Don Set S$27.80

For the main course, I ordered a value-for-money set menu which was way beyond my expectation. All the ingredients used in the preparation of the dishes were fresh.

Unagi Don (Set Menu)
Taste: 9/10

Since young, I've always been a big fan of eel. I have to say that yesterday's catch was, in fact, better than some which I had in Japan. Not only it was meaty and tender, but also it came with such a wonderful caramelised sauce. To top it off, sesame seeds were sprinkled on top to add dimension to the dish.

Age Tofu Nabe (Set Menu)
Taste: 9/10

Blocks of silky smooth tofu were coated with cornstarch before deep-fried, resulting in an unparalleled gelatinous sensation as they absorbed the thick, lightly seasoned gravy. The heady aroma of the mushrooms, which would probably be the freshest batch I've ever had in my life, pervaded the dish. I wish they'd be more generous with the amount of spring onions.

Miso Soup (Set Menu)
Taste: 8.5/10

Likewise, the miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) soup had fresh mushrooms and seaweed which contributed to the nice tang of the sea.

Chawanmushi (Set Menu)
Taste: 8.5/10

Despite being small, the steamed egg custard was highly velvety, coming with lightly salted gravy and three cute green peas presented on top of it. Hidden underneath were some chestnuts and chicken meat.

There is always room for desserts! In fact, this expression is derived from betsubara (別腹), a Japanese compound word which literally means 'separate stomach'. If you're interested to know more about it, read the article HERE.

Cheesecake Parfait S$9.80
Taste: 9/10

I believe this particular parfait was first introduced sometime last year, aiming to emulate the success of its matcha (Japanese green tea) counterpart. Savoury homemade cheesecake bits were accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream and refreshingly sour strawberries to balance out the sweetness. As I dug into it, I was surprised to find buttery flaky bits beneath the snowball.

Matcha Parfait S$9.80
Taste: 9.5/10

To date, this is the second time I'm giving a rating of 9.5/10 for a particular dish, the first being something from Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. in HK. Both of them happen to be desserts. The fun began with a scoop of matcha ice cream which was dreamily sweet, coupled with buttery biscuit, earthy chestnuts and tingling anko (Japanese red bean paste). Following which, my most favourite layer of incredibly chewy mochi (Japanese rice cake), as well as delightfully bitter and aromatic matcha jelly was unveiled. Subsequently, I was taken in by the matcha spongecake which perhaps could be slightly more velvety, and finally brought back to sanity by the crispy, salty corn flakes at the bottom of the tall glass. Gosh, I'm already having withdrawal symptoms of grumpy stomach, excess salivation and constant fidgeting just by looking at the picture above.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 9/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 8.5/10
Overall: 8.5/10

There has never been a day when I don't order the orgasmic matcha parfait, either for myself or to share with whoever dear coming with me to dine there. Pika's advice: Check out their website consistently for various promotions and seasonal dishes! Also, you may want to try their special kamameshi (lit. kettle rice)!
