SIN: Genki Sushi

A healthy dose of chirashi don!

A few years ago, Genki Sushi made its first appearance in Singapore. However, the constant bad reviews and complaints it received regarding the quality of the food served resulted in its eventual downfall. Today, however, it has managed to make a victorious comeback, incorporating the use of technology to create a seamless experience between ordering food items from iPad and getting them delivered to each individual table using mini cars.

Chirashi Don S$9.80
Taste: 9/10

Everytime I dine at the restaurant, I order the rice with fresh sashimi (Japanese raw sliced seafood) gorgeously arranged on top of it. The latest one that I had was indubitably tasty, and I was amazed by the sweetness and the degree of stickiness of the Japanese rice. I topped it with shichimi (Japanese blend of seven spices) (not shown) for a fiery kick on the tongue.

Garlic Soba S$4.20
Taste: 7/10

The striking colours of the dish was captivating, but it was unfortunate that it was half as cold as I thought it'd be.While there were adequate amounts of tuna flakes, fried garlic bits and chopped spring onions, the soba (Japanese buckwheat noodle) could be chewier.

Edo Style Egg S$2.30
Taste: 8.5/10

Being the latest addition to the menu, the Edo (fomer name of Tokyo) style egg was by no means disappointing. The fluffy omelette was surprisingly sweet and savoury at the same time. Stuffed into the pocket of the omelette was vinegared rice which went well with the former.

Flying Fish Roe Sushi S$2.30
Taste: 8/10

Wrapped with seaweed, which could be fresher, was vinegared rice with a pack of pleasantly yellow coloured roe. While I'd prefer something more savoury like salmon roe, the flying fish counterparts weren't bad as they popped lightly in the mouth to give a mild salty taste.

Wasabi Octopus S$2.80
Taste: 8/10

Remember a dish called Tears of Octopus (たこの涙) from Waraku (和楽) in Japan? Genki Sushi's rendition wasn't as tear-inducing as the former, but the stinging sensation of the wasabi (Japanese horseradish) still compelled me to pinch my nose nonetheless.

Dragon Roll Sushi S$3.80
Taste: 6/10

Regrettably, the ones named after the majestic legendary animal weren't that inspiring. Not only the avocado wasn't creamy enough, but also the eel wasn't that juicy, even though it had palatable smokiness and sweetness.

Salmon Triple Flavours Sushi S$3.80
Taste: 8/10

My favourite was the lightly seared salmon topped with delightfully creamy mentaiko (lit. pollock roe) mayonnaise. Another one was topped with cheese sauce and a dash of black pepper, which was savoury as well. On the other hand, the fresh salmon was somewhat too thin and not as juicy.

Steamed Egg Custard S$2.30
Taste: 7.5/10

The steamed egg custard was somewhat flavourful and smooth, but not exemplary. As I dug into that warm goodness, I could find mushrooms, crab sticks, fish cakes and a small shrimp, but not chicken.

Cream Croquette S$3.80
Taste: 8.5/10

Another dish that made me fell in love at first bite, the cream croquettes featured light, crispy coating which gave way easily to reveal sweet corn kernels bathed in cream. Why were there only three of them!? :P

They were best eaten immediately when they were still piping hot, dipped into tangy mayonnaise. Yummy!

Poached Egg Tempura S$3.80
Taste: 8/10

Much to my curiosity, I ordered the deep-fried poached egg which were best eaten with flavoured pepper (not shown) that came with the dish. The soft, fluffy eggs were juxtaposed with light, crispy coatings. To be honest, I saw the same dish, poached perfectly, being delivered to another table. Sigh...

Fried Soft Shell Crab S$7.80
Taste: 8/10

If I were to die tomorrow, soft shell crab would be something that I have to eat for sure. Anyway, the ones that I had the other day were pretty much a delectable treat, although they could be seasoned better. By the way, the dish used to be S$5.80 a dish last year! :O

Mochi S$4.20
Taste: 6/10

A quartet of mochi (Japanese rice cake) was presented on the plate: red bean and green tea. Sadly, those sweet treats left much to be desired. The green tea filling wasn't aromatic, while the red bean filling was adequately sweet, but the peanut powder wasn't fresh.

They looked promising, didn't they? What a pity.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

Pika's advice: If it's a must for you to get a bowl of rice, but you want to eat more of the small dishes, you can consider the Mini Chicken Teriyaki Don or Mini Oyako Don priced at S$4.20 each! While I'm generally pleased with the food offered thus far, I believe there are still rooms for improvement. Below is a picture of the iPad from which you order the dishes.

I also took a picture of the mini car bringing our orders. This method of food delivery has proven to be attractive for not only children, but also teenagers and adults alike.
