SIN: Miz Japanese Restaurant {MOVED}

Oyster dynamite burst in my mouth!

UPDATE (24/11/2017): The restaurant has moved to 17 Kampong Bahru Road.

Craving for Japanese cuisine, I chanced upon a crowded restaurant around the Tanjong Pagar district not far away from where I'm currently living in. Upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted by the friendly Japanese owner in Japanese. She even said in keigo (lit. honorific language), "どうぞお座りください!" (lit. Please have a seat!)

Avocado Salad S$12.00
Taste: 8.5/10

To kickstart the dinner, I had fresh salad topped with slices of creamy avocado. The best part was the zesty Japanese style dressing consisting of soy sauce, rice vinegar, vegetable oil and just enough wasabi (Japanese horseradish) to whet my appetite.

Crunchy Prawn Roll S$12.00
Taste: 5/10

I was dejected to find that the quintessential Japanese dish, which I had a craving for that day, was less than mediocre. In fact, it was definitely a misnomer since the friend prawns smacked in between the rolls of vinegared rice weren't crunchy, bordering on being stale.

Oyster Dynamite S$15.00
Taste: 9/10

Three big-sized oysters were presented on a plate, each covered in spicy cod roe sauce which was fully packed with sweet and savoury flavours. The shelled creatures weren't the freshest I've ever had, but they were juicy and not stale.

Shiitake Tempura S$15.00
Taste: 8/10

Huge, meaty and juicy pieces of the dark brown mushrooms were coated in crispy batter. I had no intention of ordering the dish at first, but after seeing the family sitting next to me enjoying their share, I couldn't resist the temptation and eventually called one of the servers to order a plate.

Cold Garlic Butter Udon S$15.00
Taste: 9/10

The recommended dish lived up to its name. Despite not being adequately cold, the combination of liquid butter, garlic, spring onions and caviar was heavenly. Of course, the udon (Japanese wheat-flour noodle) was adequately thick and so chewy that I really wanted to have another serving.

Eel Rice S$18.00
Taste: 8/10

Steamed in a bamboo box, the aromatic rice was beautifully presented with shredded omelette, a decent-sized eel and a more-than-half-boiled egg with spring onions on top of it. Having absorbed the aroma of the bamboo, the eel was sweet, but it could be juicier.

Pudding with Fresh Cream S$4.00
Taste: 7.5/10

To end it off, I ordered pudding which turned out to be a duet of mango jelly at the bottom and mango pudding on top. Topped with cream which was somewhat sweet, it was enough to cleanse the palate after gobbling down a variety of dishes.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 3/10
Overall: 6/10

While the food was mostly good, I'm not too sure if I'd be keen to go back to the restaurant. Yes, the owner was no doubt friendly. However, the inefficiency of the staff was truly appalling. Trying to call one of them for an extra order was an uphill task, not to mention the continuous waiting for the dishes to appear. Pika's advice: They have value-for-money sets, if you don't mind the wait, that is.
