JPN: Yumoto Shirogane Onsen Hotel (湯元白金温泉ホテル) [Breakfast]

Custard-like egg white and creamy yolk of hot spring egg!

I had a truly refreshing, uninterrupted sleep after the sumptuous dinner and the hot spring experience the previous day. Awakened by the dim morning sun rays overshadowed by falling snowflakes, I got up and prepared  myself for the buffet breakfast offered by the hotel.

Rice Meal

The dark-coloured beef curry was full-bodied, best eaten with the sticky Japanese rice. While the grilled cod was quite good (but not as good as the one I had during dinner), it was a pity that the smoked salmon was too salty. I also took a bowl of agedashi tofu, where pretty smooth beancurd cubes met a broth of soy sauce with a hint of mirin, a kind of sweet rice wine commonly used in Japanese cooking. Besides that, the miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) soup was robust. Also, little did I know before trying that the onion rings were really sweet and crispy.

Hot Spring Egg

The highlight of the day was definitely the hot spring egg which hid its creamy yolk under a layer of delicate custard of egg white. Dressed in light soy sauce, it truly brightened up my day.

Salad

All the vegetables prepared that day were crisp, with the cherry tomatoes being exceptionally juicy and sweet. The potato salad was creamy and not too heavy.

Red Tea & Orange Cordial Drink

It seemed to be the same red tea I had for dinner. The slightly cold orange juice prepared from concentrate was only slightly sweet.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

I can't believe it, but I actually forgot to take a picture of the plain bread and the croissant. Anyway, while the croissant was buttery, it wasn't crispy. Pika's advice: The hotel provides both raw eggs and hot spring eggs on the buffet table. Make sure that you don't take the wrong egg(s)!
