JPN: Tonkatsu Wako (とんかつ和幸)

Affordable and yummy tonkatsu set with clam miso soup!

Our Sapporo trip ended on a high note with a sumptuous lunch before going to the airport. Tonkatsu Wako is said to be the largest chain of restaurants specialising in, well, tonkatsu (Japanese breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet) using meat imported from the USA.

Azami Set ¥1,082 (~S$13.25)
Taste: 8.5/10

Arranged nicely on the platter were not-so-oily crab cream croquette, fried prawn and fried chicken fillet with cheese and perilla leaves. While the croquette wasn't as good as the one I had in Hyousetsu no Mon, it was tasty. The prawn was succulent, and the firm chicken meat was well-met with the fibrous mozzarella cheese. Furthermore, I enjoyed the shredded cabbages mixed with garlic mayonnaise, as well as the slightly pungent burdock salad.

The miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) soup carried with it a pleasant surprise of not only a few, but lots of small clams which were enjoyable to suck on. The shelled creatures also added a heady tang of the sea to the archetypal Japanese soup.

Miyabi Set ¥1,208 (~S$14.80)
Taste: 8.5/10

Replacing the cheesy chicken fillet and the croquette in the set described earlier were pork cutlet and fried pumpkins. The former was tender and juicy, while the latter was delightfully sweet. The chawanmushi (Japanese egg custard) was smooth and had lots of ingredients inside, including chicken and sliced mushrooms. My BFF requested orange juice for the beverage.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8.5/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

I've already missed Hokkaido. I'll definitely go back there, especially in spring when the lavenders bloom. Pika's advice: Feel free to get a refill of rice, miso soup and shredded cabbages!
