JPN: Goryo

Yummy udon with crunchy tempura flakes!

It felt really great to be back in the Land of the Rising Sun for the second time in 2013. I took Malaysian Airlines (the review will be coming soon) to Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan via Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. While waiting for our flight to Hokkaido with ANA, we had a simple lunch at Goryo, one of the restaurants in Terminal 1 of the airport. Note that there isn't any English menu available, but ironically, the restaurant name is written in Latin alphabets.

Unagi Don and Mini Udon Set ¥1,200 (~S$13.10)
Unagi Don - Taste: 7/10
Mini Udon - Taste: 8.5/10

The actual name of the dish is うなぎ丼とミニうどんセット. The eel was better than average, even though it somewhat lacked the smoky perfection. I've definitely tasted better elsewhere. On the other hand, the udon (Japanese wheat flour noodle) was delectably thick and chewy, topped with lots of seaweed, spring onions and tenkasu (Japanese crunchy bits of deep-fried dough) which lent an oily and savoury touch to the dish.

Soy Sauce Ramen ¥780 (~S$9.40)
Taste: 7/10

The actual name of the dish is 醤油ラーメン. The noodle wasn't as chewy as I'd like it to be, and the soup was pretty light. The sesame seeds provided did manage to add a little bit of flavours. The chashu (Japanese sliced pork belly) was pretty lean, but tender. Too bad there was only one slice of it.

Hamburg Steak Plate ¥980 (~S$11.85)
Taste: 8.5/10

The actual name of the dish is ハンバーグプレット. I truly enjoyed the meat which was juicy and tender, laden with sweet sauce with a bit of mushrooms. The rice was perfectly cooked, being a little bit sticky and no doubt filling. The vegetables were of acceptable freshness.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10

That was a prelude to an awesome food journey in Japan in winter. Stay tuned for the upcoming reviews! Pika's advice: They've recently launched a new dessert of cheesecake shaped like a snowman! Do give it a try!
