SIN: Eat at Taipei

Better fried fresh milk than the original!

UPDATE (05/04/2016): The branch at Chinatown Point has closed down. Do check their website for more information on the rest of the branches.

I've reviewed quite a few restaurants managed by the Creative Eateries group. Eat at Taipei is another one, offering a wide range of Taiwanese food, including those which can typically be found in Ximending and Shilin Night Market.

'San Bei' Chicken with Basil Set S$17.90
Taste: 7/10

The san bei ji (lit. three-cup chicken) was pretty flavourful and the aroma of basil was quite strong. Served heaten in an earthenware pot, it remained warm throughout the dinner. I enjoyed the sweet mango slices, as well as the braised peanuts. However, the soup tasted kinda weird, and the minced pork on top of the rice tasted slightly unusual too.

I also took a close-up picture of the pretty tender chicken. Also worth to mention is the fact that there were adequate ginger slices which packed a punch on the palate.

Spicy Taiwanese Braised Beef Noodle S$12.50
Taste: 6/10

My friend ordered the beef noodle which I thought wasn't particularly interesting. While the soup looked appetisingly dark, it wasn't as spicy and powerful as I thought. The yellow noodle was adequately chewy. Quite a generous amount of beef was given though.

'Si Shen' Herbal Soup with Pig Innards S$5.90
Taste: 7/10

Si shen literally means 'four Gods'. I wouldn't say the taste was godly, but it was a pretty nourishing broth with heady aroma of Chinese herbs. Thinly sliced meat, liver, stomach and intestines could be found inside.

Fried Fresh Milk S$5.90
Taste: 8/10

Readers who've gone to Shilin Night Market might've seen fried fresh milk being sold there. Truth be told, the ones prepared by Eat at Taipei were better than the original ones. While the former weren't as crispy as I thought they'd be, the inside was enjoyably creamy and sweet.

Papaya with Milk S$5.50
Taste: 5/10

The beverage that my friend ordered was disappointing. While real papaya was used, it was too watery for my liking. The amount of milk was insufficient too.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

Frankly speaking, I don't think most of the food are value for money. However, perhaps I'll be back whenever I'm craving for fried fresh milk. Haha... Pika's advice: Tainan coffin toast is available here. You may want to give it a try!
