SIN: Saveur

Where pork fats meet runny yolk!

If you're looking for French cuisine that won't burn a hole in your pocket, you have to make a visit to Saveur. Having a casual interior, the branch at Purvis Street that I went to recently was pretty much packed during lunch hours.

Saveur's Pasta S$4.90
Taste: 8/10

I started with one of the signature appetiser dishes which my buddy has always been raving about. Tossed with oil and chopped konbu (Japanese kelp), then thin, lightly-seasoned pasta went down the throat easily. The combination of minced pork and sakura ebi, dried and salted small shrimps, was great too, just that it slowly grew to be a tad salty.

Pork Main Course S$10.90
Taste: 8/10

A cube of fatty pork belly was served with creamy green lentils and soft-boiled egg. The soft, starchy lentils complemented the adequately fatty meat. However, the pork skin could definitely be crispier to be more pleasing on the palate.

Duck Main Course S$12.90
Taste: 9/10

Sitting on top of milky, velvety and lusciously sweet mashed potatoes, the duck leg shone above the rest due to its highly tender and juicy meat. Again, it'd be great if the duck skin could be crispier. The sautéed mushrooms were savoury too.

Creamy Basmati Rice S$2.00
Taste: 7.5/10

To complement the main courses, I also ordered a bowl of Basmati rice which was fragrant, but not as creamy as I thought it'd be. Apart from that, I'm sure it could be cooked in such a way to make it fluffier.

Pistachio Panna Cotta S$6.90
Taste: 6.5/10

It was a pity that such a great lunch had to end with a mediocre dessert item that I chose. While the panna cotta (lit. cooked cream) had a smooth texture, it was too sweet for my liking. The ground pistachios on top of it helped a little bit in neutralising the sweetness though.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 8.5/10
Overall: 6.5/10

I felt that the ambience that day was really not bad despite the growing number of people who came down for lunch. Well, at least it wasn't that noisy, so I could still feel cosy. The approaching-middle-aged server was friendly and efficient too. Pika's advice: There are new creations available which aren't listed in the website. Come down and find out yourself!
