JPN: Kujiraya (くじら屋)

One of the few whale meat restaurants in the world!

From the Kansai region of Japan, we're now moving to Tokyo, the capital city of the Land of the Rising Sun. When you've had the chance to go to Shibuya, don't forget to snap a picture with the statue of the loyal dog named Hachiko and drop by the restaurant for a taste of whale meat. Worry not, the restaurant has assured that they're not using endangered whale species in their kitchen.

Whale Steak Set ¥1,533 (~S$6.60)
Taste: 8/10

My buddy and I agreed to share two lunch set meals. The first one that came was the whale steak set, where the highlight was seared whale meat in sweet teriyaki sauce. The meat was pretty succulent with a bit of iron smell (yes, whale meat is an excellent source of iron), and it actually tasted somewhat like beef. I also enjoyed the fresh and crisp salad with sesame dressing.

Whale Sashimi Set ¥1,428 (~S$18.00)
Taste: 8.5/10

Having deep-red colour akin to that of beetroots, the slices of raw whale meat were a delight due to their enjoyably fatty and chewy texture, as well as the slight sweetness they possessed. They didn't taste fishy at all, and neither did I detect any iron smell (perhaps the iron smell in the steak came from the oxidation of the iron due to the heat used while cooking).

As can be seen from the board, some plus points of whale meat compared to others include: rich in amino acids and proteins, low in calories and good for recovery from fatigue. Pika's advice: If you're looking for something cheaper for lunch, you may want to consider the Today's Special Lunch priced at only ¥980 (~S$12.35)! As the name suggests, the menu should be changed periodically.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10

You may want to pick up a copy of a brochure which explains about whaling before you leave the restaurant. Well, I'm neither approving nor disapproving of eating whale meat, but I suppose once in a while won't do harm.
