SIN: Lawry's, The Prime Rib

How big is The "Diamond Jim Brady" Cut?

Welcome to our 200th review! It's been an interesting food journey all along with Pikachu and Melon, and of course, we can't do without your utmost support, our beloved readers! Thank you very much. Today's review is on one of the world's famous steakhouses which was founded in 1938 in California.

I've just got to know that Lawry's made its first international expansion to, suprisingly, Jakarta in 1996. It then came to Singapore in 1999. In the restaurant, the famous carved-to-order beef is served from a large cart pushed by the carver. BTW, that Equil sparkling water costs S$7.00 per bottle.

Bread

Two types of bread were offered for a start: limpa and sourdough. The former, a Swedish delicacy which is supposedly infused with cardamom and anise, had a subtle fragrance. The latter, with its hard crust and soft interior, had a pretty tangy taste. The butter was shaped prettily like roses.

The Famous Original Spinning Bowl Salad (Set Menu)
Taste: 9/10

As part of the USDA Prime Rib Dinner, we had their signature salad dish of romaine and iceberg lettuce, watercress, shredded beetroots, cherry tomatoes, chopped eggs and croutons. The ingredients were tossed with what's claimed to be an "exclusive vintage dressing" inside a large metal bowl which was spun by a server on top of a bed of ice. They were all fresh, and the leafy vegetables were crisp. Oh, the croutons were amazing. Eaten with a chilled fork, the salad was well-bound by the not-so-heavy dressing (and redeeming at the same time before I gobbled down all the sinful stuff).

The "Diamond Jim Brady" Cut S$108.00
Taste: 8.5/10

The second largest cut in the menu, it got its name from a famous American businessman, James Buchanan Brady, who had that unique nickname. Anyway, the beef was no doubt tender, having been allowed to age for enzymes to work their way through the network of proteins, but I wouldn't say it was heavenly. The brown gravy wasn't special, but it was still good, especially with the smooth and milky Idaho mashed potatoes. Also shown on the plate was a slightly-better-than-average slice of puffy Yorkshire pudding made of flour, eggs and milk. I apologise for forgetting to take a picture of the pure horseradish which was a bit too much for me, as well as the whipped cream horseradish which wasn't overly stinging.

Atlantic Lobster Dinner S$99.00
Taste: 9/10

Three broiled Nova Scotia lobster tails might not look as amazing as the beef, but I actually enjoyed them more. The meat was so sweet and succulent that I was tempted to order another plate, not to mention the combination of drawn butter, Thousand Island dressing (or something similar to it) and lemon juice that made it such a delightful main course. Lightly sautéed vegetables and creamy mashed potatoes perked up my appetite even more.

Vanilla Crème BrĂ»lĂ©e S$10.00
Taste: 8/10

To end the meal, I ordered, you know, one of my most favourite desserts of all time which apparently came with a gleaming compote made of berries. The delicate caramel layer revealed a custard base which was pretty creamy and somewhat rich as it crumbled. It wasn't extraordinary, but it was definitely satisfying enough with the sour berries balancing the overall sweetness.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8.5/10
Ambience: 9/10
Service: 9/10
Overall: 8.5/10

Service was pretty much exemplary, except towards the end of the meal where the restaurant became much more crowded. I had to wait for a while to get my bill, as well as my change. Other than that, I truly enjoyed my dinner in a restaurant with such a relaxing, if not fantastic, ambience. Pika's advice: Tea time, anyone? Head down to Lawry's during the weekdays from 2.30 to 5.30pm for their Afternoon Indulgence priced at S$15.00 per person which includes one sweet and one savoury snack dishes, as well as a choice of coffee, tea, soft drink or juice.
