SIN: Loving Hut {MOVED}

Have you tried vegetarian 'pho' before?

UPDATE (04/03/2016): The eatery has moved to 229 Joo Chiat Road.

Loving Hut is one of the largest, fastest growing families of vegan restaurants in the world, having established numerous branches over more than 20 countries from the East to the West. There are currently two branches in Singapore. I remember seeing one branch in town in HK when I was on a leisurely bus ride (ahh, those days...).

Crispy Oyster Mushroom S$4.80
Taste: 8.5/10

For appetiser, the crispy oyster mushrooms which still retained their juiciness were delightful. They were enjoyably crispy and not greasy, accompanied well by the sweet and sour chili sauce on the side. Oh, I love oyster mushrooms, and mom loves to experiment with them!

Au Lac Pho S$4.80
Taste: 7/10

To my friend's delight, the eatery serves vegetarian pho (Vietnamese rice noodle soup). While it was indeed interesting to have mock fish balls, mushroom balls and fresh mushrooms, the sweetness of the soup tasted somewhat artificial. Thanks to the slice of lime, the dish was saved. Having said that, the fragrance of fresh basil leaves in the soup was charming.

Ocean Bliss Rice Set S$6.80
Taste: 7.5/10

Being one of their trademark dishes, the breaded mock fish dish was good, but perhaps not at its highest potential. Made of mushrooms, beancurd and seaweed, the deep-fried patties were drizzled with sweet dark sauce, but only somewhat crispy. The brown rice was cooked well, while the soup with a cube of potato and a slice of carrot tasted mildly sweet.

Iced Bandung FOC
Taste: 7.5/10

It was the time when you could get a free glass of the pink beverage made of rose syrup, evaporated milk and a bit of salt, when you flashed your NUS matriculation card. Anyway, I was glad that it was adequately sweet without being overly diluted, although I wished it'd be creamier. Pika's advice: NUS people, I think you can now enjoy a discount to your total bill when you flash your matriculation card!

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 6.5/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

I'd love to try the vegetarian rendang (Indonesian spicy meat dish) next time!
