SIN: Honzen Café {MOVED}

Feast for the eyes: dragon fruit fried rice!

UPDATE (29/06/2014): The eatery has moved to 41 Sam Leong Road.

I apologise for being tardy in updating my blog. I've been caught up with laboratory work lately, and I barely have the time to relax. Today's review is on another vegetarian eatery located just opposite of the Bugis Junction taxi stand. I believe Honzen Café and Lemon Tree Bistro, judging from the similar decor of the two eateries.

Jade Roll S$3.90
Taste: 7.5/10

I started my meal with, perhaps, the vegetarian version of lor bak (Hokkien and Teochew meat rolls) as an appetiser. Studded with beancurd and mushrooms, it tasted pretty light on the palate. It'd be better if the beancurd skin wrapping the roll could be crispier.

Pumpkin Soup S$4.50
Taste: 8.5/10

Served piping hot, the pumpkin soup really made my day, especially since it was raining that Saturday afternoon. The soup was adequately creamy without being sickening, and the natural sweetness of the pumpkin was awesome. There were carrot bits inside.

Dragon Fruit Fried Rice S$7.90
Taste: 7.5/10

I tried one of their specialty dishes which, by the way, I'd been eyeing on for quite some time. Well, just look at the amazing colour of the rice! Cooked with red dragon fruits, carrot bits, green peas and vegetarian ham slices, the fried rice was good, but it definitely wouldn't harm to add just a bit more salt.

Spaghetti Crème Mushroom S$7.90
Taste: 8/10

Another visually appealing main course, it was laden with luscious mushroom sauce which was indeed creamy and had a substantial amount of black pepper. Cooked with colour bell peppers and shiitake mushrooms, the spaghetti was al dente for sure.

Healthy Vegetarian Beancurd (Green Tea) S$2.50
Taste: 8.5/10

For dessert, I ordered the green tea flavoured vegetarian beancurd. It was silky smooth with heady green tea fragrance. It was only slightly sweet, but it was pleasant and comforting still. Pika's advice: Do try the original flavour which should be equally good!

Latte Macchiato S$3.00
Taste: 7.5/10

When the drink was served, I was amazed by the neat colour gradation below the frothy layer. While the aroma of the coffee was pretty good and the drink wasn't overly sweet, I felt that it could be creamier.

Welcome Drink FOC
Taste: 8/10

Oh, before I forget, a small glass of plum vinegar, which is always claimed to enhance appetite (and aid digestion), was served as an apéritif. It was lightly flavoured with just enough acidity to perk me up.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 8.5/10
Service: 8.5/10
Overall: 8.5/10

All the food served don't contain eggs, onions and garlic. Service was way better than average for sure. One of the waitresses was really friendly and efficient, even though she had a bit of difficulty speaking English.
