HKG: Canteen II @ HKUST [Tea Time]

Airy mousse topped with cereal!

Even though I didn't have lunch and dinner very often in Canteen II, I frequently dropped by there during tea time. One of the reason was the fact that the canteen was less crowded, but more importantly, I was taken in by the visually appealing cakes in the coffee corner.

Tea Set HK$17.50 (~S$2.90)
(set includes two dishes and a choice of coffee, milk tea or soft drink)

The tea set ordered the other day comprised a bowl of mock shark fin, a plate of fried noodle with BBQ chicken wing, as well as a cup of milk tea. Read here for the taste of the milk tea. By the way, I realised that I didn't manage to try the coffee because I kept ordering milk tea haha...

Mock Shark Fin Soup (Set Menu)
Taste: 8.5/10

The egg flower soup with mock shark fin was better than what I'd expected it to be. Served piping hot, it was full-bodied with a heady aroma of sesame oil and came with a generous amount of delectably slimy mock shark fin.

Fried Noodle with BBQ Chicken Wing (Set Menu)
Taste: 7.5/10

The fried noodle came with beansprouts sitting prettily on it. The former was so-so without being too dry, while the latter was cooked thoroughly that they didn't have any of the raw taste. The BBQ chicken wing was marinated with honey and soy sauce, giving out a sweet sensation to the tongue.

Crispy Buns Set HK$15.00 (~S$2.50)
(set includes a choice of coffee, milk tea or soft drink)
Taste: 8/10

Between peanut butter and a combination of butter and condensed milk, I chose the latter to go with my crispy buns. The buns were really light and crispy with a well-balanced interplay between the sweet condensed milk and the salty butter. Of course, it was a delight to wash them down with a cup of good milk tea.

Egg Tart HK$3.00 (~S$0.50)
Taste: 7.5/10

Egg tarts have made its way to school! Since it'd been standing for quite some time after being taken out of the oven, the crust wasn't overly crumbly. The egg custard was mildly sweet, but it wasn't as smooth as I'd want it to be.

Walnut and Chocolate Brownie HK$11.00 (~S$1.80)
Taste: 8/10

The chocolate taste of the brownie was quite intense, combined with flavourful walnut and savoury grated coconut. It, however, would be leaning towards perfection if its texture could be less chewy.

Black Forest Cake HK$11.00 (~S$1.80)
Taste: 8/10

It was a mock black forest cake, but it was surprisingly pretty addictive. The well-baked, spongy cake interspersed with chewy dark cherry sweets was topped with chocolate flakes. Sadly, it was rum-free.

Green Tea Cheesecake HK$13.00 (~S$2.15)
Taste: 7.5/10

Granted, the cheesecake was adequately creamy, but the green tea flavour wasn't really strong and it waned pretty quickly. The strawberry, kiwi and blueberry on top of it were fresh.

Cereal Pudding HK$8.00 (~S$1.30)
Taste: 8.5/10

Mousse would be a more appropriate word to call this particular dessert. Topped with crumbly, melt-in-the-mouth cereal bits, the mousse was airy and light in texture, but rich in vanilla flavour without being cloyingly sweet.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Overall: 7.5/10

Pika's advice: Craving for Starbucks coffee, or need one to help you stay awake during lectures? Get them from the coffee corner! With this, we've come to the end of our exploration of food in HKUST. Oh, wait, can you guess what the next post will be on?
