HKG: UC Bistro @ HKUST

Gobble up the deviled chicken steak!

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what does UC stands for, but I suppose it's University Centre. It's a comfy eatery serving mostly Western dishes. Next to the eatery is the Uni-Bar which offers snacks and alcoholic drinks. Anyway, the food featured in this review will be the lunch sets.


Japanese Set Lunch HK$62.00 (~S$10.30)
Enoki Beef - Taste: 7.5/10
Kaniko Salad - Taste: 7/10
Miso Soup - Taste: 7/10

Slabbed with teriyaki sauce which had the right degree of sweetness and consistency, the main course was pretty enjoyable with a bowl of warm, fluffy rice. It'd be better if they offered Japanese rice though. The beef slices weren't that juicy, the enoki mushrooms certainly were.

The salad comprised julienned cucumbers, crab sticks and a bit of fish roe mixed together with Japanese mayonnaise which was kinda light. It definitely could be sweeter, tangier and creamier.

The miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) soup wasn't as hearty as I expected it to be, but it was alright. There were a few slices of konbu (lit. kelp), as well as two slices of kamaboko (Japanese fish cake) inside.


Green Tea (Set Menu)

Despite the colour, I felt that the green tea was kinda watery.

For the Western Set Lunch, prices vary depending on the main course. I was allured by the Grilled Deviled Chicken Steak priced at HK$69.00 (~S$11.50). Also, you can get the Dessert of the Day to complete the set for an additional HK$15.00 (~S$2.50), and of course, I gladly took the offer.


Appetisers (Set Menu)
Salad - Taste: 7.5/10
Soup of the Day - Taste: 7.5/10

The vegetables used for the salad were generally fresh, but I felt that they could give more of the tangy dressing to bind everything together.

The soup of the day was the common tomato-based borsch (Ukrainian soup which is usually made of beetroots) which was pretty thick and leaned towards the sweet side. It was a pity that there weren't many vegetables inside though.


Grilled Deviled Chicken Steak (Set Menu)
Taste: 8.5/10

First of all, it was a visually appealing ensemble on a plate, wasn't it? The main course was delicious, not so much because of the sauce - a concoction of Worchestershire sauce, brown sugar and Dijon mustard which was tangy anyway, but rather the chicken meat itself which was tender, oozing with pure goodness of the natural juice. The broccoli and cherry tomatoes were pretty fresh, and the criss cut fries were well-seasoned without being greasy.


Lemon Tea (Set Menu)

I remember that I already had a cup of coffee for breakfast, which was the reason why I chose to have a cup of lemon tea instead. The tea was refreshingly bitter and aromatic, made sharp with the acidic lemon slices.


Dessert of the Day (Set Menu)
Taste: 7.5/10

The dessert of the day was a thin slice of blueberry cheesecake which was moderately creamy with somewhat fluffy crumbs below. The blueberry sauce was jelly-like.

All in all, I had a great lunch after I finally completed a series of final examinations in the university. The staff were friendly, but they could be more attentive.
