HKG: Chinese Restaurant @ HKUST

Memorable coffee and milk pudding!

4 June 2012: It was the last evening spent in HK during the exchange programme. Before I went home, I'd already promised to myself that I had to dine at the posh Chinese Restaurant in HKUST which features mostly Northern and Southern Chinese cuisine at affordable prices. In fact, the restaurant is the place where local professors usually invite visiting professors, scholars, etc. to dine and chit-chat.

Steamed Chicken with Green Onions (Half) HK$85.00 (~S$14.15)
Taste: 6.5/10

I wasn't impressed with the steamed chicken because it wasn't that juicy. Also, some of the parts were a bit tough. However, the soy sauce was pretty delectable and had the right balance of flavour, made fragrant with chopped scallions and coriander leaves.

Deep-Fried Prawns with Salted Egg Yolk Sauce HK$88.00 (~S$14.65)
Taste: 6.5/10

Although the prawns were medium-sized and pretty succulent, the batter which coated them wasn't really crunchy. Besides that, the salted egg yolk sauce was kinda insipid.

Braised Assorted Vegetables in Red Taro Paste HK$48.00 (~S$8.00)
Taste: 5/10

Honestly, the variety of vegetables was there, but salty would be the word to describe the dish overall. Furthermore, the red taro paste was too dry for my liking which resulted in everything sticking to one another.

Pudding Platter HK$20.00 (~S$3.30)
Coffee and Milk - Taste: 9/10
Wolfberry and Osmanthus - Taste: 8.5/10
Citrus and Coconut Milk - Taste: 8/10
Red Bean and Coconut Milk - Taste: 8/10

I was amazed by the perfectly regular pattern of the coffee and milk pudding, as well as its taste: intense coffee goodness with just the right amount of milk to make it creamy. I also enjoyed the wolfberry and osmanthus pudding which was pretty aromatic. The citrus and coconut milk pudding had a vague citrus aroma, and the red bean and coconut milk pudding wasn't as creamy as expected. Well, the coconut milk layer did add a savoury note to them. Pika's advice: You won't regret getting a plate full of only the coffee and milk pudding! :)

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

Frankly speaking, I was pretty much disappointed with the quality of food offered by the restaurant. I believe they should improve, especially in order not to leave a bad impression for the visitors. Service was okay with the staff being able to communicate in simple English.
