HKG: Wah Fung

Amazing Guangdong fare, presumably the barbecued meat as well!

Greetings from Jeju Island! I have prepared this review to be published during my stay here to make up for the lack of speed in updating my blog (but hmm, actually I've already written more reviews than I did last month!). Anyway, I'll still be talking about HK food for now. Wah Fung is a restaurant which actually specialises in barbecued meat, but somehow, I wasn't really craving for one the other day.

My eyes were wide open when I saw the extensive menu placed outside the restaurant, and my legs immediately brought me inside. Rest assured, you'll be spoilt for choice. They also offer what some people would consider as exotic food; snake soup being one of the examples. I love snake soup so much, but sadly it wasn't available that day.

Deep-Fried Shrimp in Wasabi and Yellow Mustard Salad Dressing HK$88.00 (~S$14.65)
Taste: 8.5/10

I saw the dish in their list of recommended items, and I just had to order it. Deep-fried in batter which wasn't overly thick, the shrimps were really succulent on the inside, and addictively crunchy on the outside. The wasabi (Japanese horseradish) sauce wasn't too over-powering, but strong enough to stimulate the nasal passages. The peach slices managed to add natural sweetness to the dish overall.

Deep-Fried Chicken in Lemon Sauce HK$68.00 (~S$11.30)
Taste: 9/10

In recent years, I've grown fond of chicken in lemon sauce, and the one that I had in Wah Fung was simply irresistible. It stood out with its crispy golden batter-wrapped skin and tender, juicy meat. The lemon sauce itself tasted very fresh, without being overly salty or sweet. Of course, it was a delight to have sesame seeds sprinkled on top for an additional aroma.

Scrambled Egg with Shrimp and Dried Scallop HK$68.00 (~S$11.30)
Taste: 9/10

Another awesome dish which made my day! Even though the eggs weren't cooked using Hokkaido milk or the likes, they were quite creamy, fluffy and moist, transformed into pure bliss with the generous amount (about 10 pieces or so) of sweet and springy shrimps (yes, they really know how to handle shrimps!), a bit of dried scallops which were kinda bouncy and lots of aromatic spring onions.

Seasonal Vegetable with Oyster Sauce HK$17.00 (~S$2.80)
Taste: 7.5/10

It was just the usual chye sim (Chinese mustard green) to make a balanced meal. Blanched till pretty smooth, it was more than acceptable, although I guess they ought to give a bit more of the oyster sauce.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8.5/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 8/10

I enjoyed dining under the dim lights, and even though the restaurant was more than 50% occupied, it wasn't that noisy that night. Service was good, although not exceptional. Well, I'd love to come back to try the barbecued meat. From what I know, there's Wah Fung Hong Kong BBQ Restaurant in New South Wales, Australia, although I'm not exactly sure if that's a branch of the original Wah Fung here in HK or it just uses the name. Whatever it is, it just goes to show that the barbecued items are famous indeed. Pika's advice: Looking for affordable afternoon tea sets? Come to Wah Fung Restaurant, available Mon-Sat: 2.30pm - 6.00pm!
