HKG: Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

Shrimp galore, and fabulous desserts!

Inspired by a movie titled Forrest Gump, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. was founded in 1996 in Monterey, California, and it currently has more than 30 branches worldwide. I was enthralled while watching the emotional movie, but now let's see if the food offered by the restaurant could win my heart! Anyway, Bubba Gump is one of the restaurants in the Peak Tower offering breathtaking views of HK city and Victoria Harbour (when it's not misty, of course :P).

Traditional Stuffed Eggs HK$55.00 (~S$9.15)
Taste: 8/10

It might be a relatively high price to pay for a total of three hard-boiled eggs, but I assure you, they were delightful. Perhaps more commonly known as deviled eggs, the egg yolks were mixed together with mayonnaise, mustard, onions and bacon bits. Served cold, the dish offered tasty, creamy sensation to the tongue.

Hush Pups HK$72.00 (~S$12.00)
Taste: 7/10

Well, I'm not entirely sure if these deep-fried dumplings would really stop your dogs from barking, but it couldn't stop me from saying that it was slightly better than average. The dumplings were made of fish, shrimp and corn kernels coated with cornmeal. The accompanying rémoulade‎ sauce (usually a mixture of mayonnaise, various herbs, gherkins and anchovy essence) didn't taste much different from the original mayonnaise with only slight fragrance of herbs. Pika's advice: If you'd like to come back to the restaurant within a month, you can get a free Hush Pups by keeping the receipt (presumably after spending more than two or three hundred dollars), completing an online survey and subsequently giving back the receipt in your next visit!

Shrimper's Heaven HK$208.00 (~S$34.65)

"Love shrimp? This one's for you!" is actually written in the menu. Here's the picture of the four types of shrimp in this particular main course which also includes fries and salad.

Coconut Shrimp - Taste: 8.5/10
Tempura Shrimp - Taste: 8/10
Fried Shrimp - Taste: 8/10
Chilly Shrimp - Taste: 8/10

While all of them were good, I would pick the coconut shrimp to be the winner due to the pleasant sweetness of the crunchy batter. The Japanese style shrimp had light and airy batter, the fried shrimp was thoroughly seasoned and the chilly shrimp was sweet and juicy. By the way, there were three types of dipping sauces given: tasty Asian (with strong sesame aroma), Cajun marmalade (with too much marmalade taste for my liking) and zesty cocktail (that tasted like a combination of tomato and chili sauce).

Fish with Cajun Shrimp HK$178.00 (~S$29.65)
Taste: 7/10

In my opinion, the grilled Mahi Mahi fish was nothing to rave about, although it was adequately seasoned. Moreover, the shrimp wasn't that succulent. I was glad though that the Cajun cream sauce wasn't too over-powering. Lastly, the mashed potatoes were smooth, but neither buttery nor milky.

Texas Cajun Chicken Sandwich HK$100.00 (~S$16.65)
Taste: 8/10

Perhaps one of the cheapest main courses available in the menu (and having no relation to seafood at all), the sandwich, or rather, the burger was surprisingly delectable and fulfilling. While it seemed like the burger bun wasn't toasted, the grilled chicken breast really tasted like the one that would be prepared for a steak dish. The vegetables used were fresh, and the pickled cucumber lent a sweet and sour tang to the savoury burger as a whole. Also, if you prefer crunchy bacon, you'll like this one. Oh, just to let you know, below the tomato were fresh red onions! :P

Key Lime Pie HK$60.00 (~S$10.00)
Taste: 8/10

As usual, I'm very particular about the crust when it comes to a pie. The one served the other day was crumbly enough, although it wasn't that buttery. I also found the crust to be too thin in comparison to the custard above it. Anyway, the custard had a strong lime taste - sweet and sour, carrying with it the slightly bitter taste of lime rind which I found quite nice. Oh, chilled spoon or fork would be provided for you to enjoy your dessert!

Mama's Cinnamon Bread Pudding HK$68.00 (~S$11.30)
Taste: 9.5/10

One adjective: impressive! The soft, warm bread pudding, which had a strong cinnamon taste and raisins embedded on it, sat on an equally warm puddle of thick vanilla sauce, carrying with it a scoop of vanilla ice cream which slowly melted to moisturise the bread even further. No doubt it was sweet, but not cloyingly so. Do try this one!

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 8.5/10
Overall: 8/10

While the restaurant was crowded and there wasn't much room for movement, I enjoyed the dimly-lit environment. Service was efficient: the servers could speak English well, and the food was served promptly. Oh, on each table sat two licensed plates which could be flipped so that one would be behind the other. One of them says "Run Forrest Run", while the other says "Stop Forrest Stop". Whenever you need to call the server, you just need to show the "Stop Forrest Stop" plate, and one would attend to you soon.
