MAS: Coffee Terrace [Buffet]

Mind-boggling international buffet spread!

I first knew about Coffee Terrace many years ago from a TV programme in Indonesia (sorry, I can't recall the name of the programme). Finally I got a chance to step into the restaurant for lunch when I did a side trip to Genting Highlands during my KL trip. There are six different stalls : Western, Japanese, Western Asian, Chinese, Nyonya and Local Favourite, in addition to the dessert section. Plain water is included in the buffet.

I'll put down the price for buffet lunch here.

Adult RM 55.00 (~S$22.85)

Western Salad

If available, I start grading the quality of a buffet by sinking my teeth into a plate of salad. The variety of vegetables offered was amazing, and most, if not all, of the ingredients were fresh: moist and crunchy. The cheese croutons were delightful!

Western Dish

I guess it's okay for me to say it out now that the food offered by the Western stall was the best among the other stalls. The fish fillet was juicy, and it still retained its texture. Another notable food item would be the lamb stew where the lamb meat was really tender. I even scooped another portion of croutons just because they were so nice and crunchy.

Japanese Dish

The food offered by the Japanese stall, unfortunately, fell below my expectation. The fried items were kinda soggy, and the sushi items weren't that appetising. However, the cooked items, such as the beef teriyaki, was quite nice, although it might be a little bit too sweet.

Western Asian Dish

I was pleased by the food offered by the Western Asian stall where one can find both vegetarian and non-vegetarian stuff. Many of the cooked items that came with gravy had a powerful taste in a good way, thanks to the variety of spices used. The Basmati rice was cooked well as it wasn't sticky.

Chinese Soup

Before venturing further, I tried a bowl of soup from the Chinese stall. As you can see, the amount of oil might be excessive, but the robust soup won my heart. I enjoyed the lotus root which was still slightly crunchy, starchy and a little sticky.

Chinese Dish

The dim sum dishes were nothing to rave about as they were short on flavour. The cooked dishes, on the other hand, were pretty tasty, especially the Marmite fish which was delightfully sweet, topped with sesame to give it a smoky flavour.

Nyonya Dish

I was delighted to see chicken satay being offered. The chicken meat used was lean, and it was only slightly sweet. Too bad the accompanying onion and cucumber slices were dry. The rest of the food items were average, but I didn't really like the otah (Peranakan fish cake) which was prepared with too much coconut milk.

Local Favourite Dish

The Local Favourite stall offered items such as flavoured rice and yong tau foo (Chinese soup dish with a variety of ingredients, usually of your preference) which I didn't try. Anyway, the chicken rice (on the right) didn't pass the fragrance test and the chili sauce lacked the kick. On the other hand, the yam rice (on the left) was quite tasty. Oh, I just took the kamaboko (Japanese fish cake) for the yong tau foo for fun! :P

Fruits

The variety of fruits was pretty good, but sadly, most of them weren't that fresh. The watermelon was sweet though.

Cake and Pastry (1)

The selection of dessert was pretty enticing. While the kue lapis (lit. layer cake) wasn't as good as the authentic, traditional ones, the choco-strawberry cake was nice. It wasn't cloyingly sweet either.

Cake and Pastry (2)

I have to mention that in general, the pastry base was pretty nice, although it could be a bit more flaky. The fruit danish was one of the best items.

Jelly and Mousse

I really enjoyed the jelly and mousse in Coffee Terrace. Highly recommended!

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10

Actually, there's nothing much to talk about service, but the staff were quick to clear our empty plates and they were pretty efficient in filling up drinking water. Pika's advice: If you don't fancy buffet, you can go for a la carte dining from 2.30pm to 5.30pm, and 9.30pm to 5.30am.
